The Toronto Maple Leafs placed defenseman Jared Cowen on waivers Wednesday for purposes of buying out his contract.
Cowen was acquired from the Ottawa Senators in the Dion Phaneuf trade in February, but the blue-liner never played a game for the Maple Leafs.
The 25-year-old had one year and $2.15 million left on deal

Doug Armstrong isn't expecting to sign his captain to a new deal before the start of free agency.
David Backes is one of five pending UFAs on the St. Louis Blues' roster heading into July 1, joining Troy Brouwer, Steve Ott, Scottie Upshall, and Kyle Brodziak.
Backes posted 21 goals and 45 points last season, but those were his lowest totals through an 82-game season in the last six years. He notched seven goals and 14 points in 20 playoff contests.
Armstrong said Saturday he wants to reward the veteran for his work over the years, but also knows the 32-year-old forward's production could continue to decline.
The Blues have about $13 million in projected cap space, according to General Fanager, and Armstrong will also need to negotiate new deals for pending restricted free agents Jaden Schwartz and Magnus Paajarvi.

Dean Ambrose captured the Money in the Bank briefcase earlier in the evening during the "Money in the Bank" pay-per-view, earning the right to a WWE World Heavyweight Championship bout whenever he saw fit.
It didn't take long for him to decide when that time would be, as Ambrose elected to cash in his contract shortly after Seth Rollins regained the title from a game Roman Reigns in a grueling, hotly contested main event.
As Rollins looked toward the entrance ramp, Ambrose came from behind and smashed the briefcase over his former Shield partner's head, laying him out in the center of the ring.

It appears the George Stroumboulopoulos era on Hockey Night in Canada is over.
The host won't return next season, reports The Toronto Star's Dave Feschuk, who adds that Ron MacLean - the man Stroumboulopoulos replaced - will take back his old gig.
Stroumboulopoulos was brought in to attract a younger audience, but with all seven Canadian franchises missing the playoffs in 2015-16, ratings were down across the board.

BUNK GM BINE GILL COULDN'T GET THEM RESIGNED.AS PER THE VEGAS ODDS THE SPARTANS HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF WINNING THE CHAMPIONSHIP NEXT YEAR. VIPERS DON'T HAVE GOALIE AT THR MOMENT IN THEIR SYSTEM. VIPERS ALSO HAVE NO CAPTAIN NAMED. AFTER CAPTAIN CURSE STEPPED DOWN FOLLOWING LACK OF LEADERSHIP AND SUCKING TO PUT POINTS ON THE SCORESHEET. LOOKS WELL BE TANKING NEXT YEAR

Drake didn't believe the Cleveland Cavaliers would take home the NBA title, and now he has to pay up.
Following the Cavs' win over the Golden State Warriors on Sunday night, Drake was called out on Snapchat by fellow rapper French Montana, who claimed the Toronto Raptors' global ambassador owes him $60,000 from a bet they made.
"Shout-out to my brother Drizzy Drake for that 60 bands, 'cause you ain't believe in LeBron," French said.

Vincent Lecavalier, a 17-year veteran of the National Hockey League and a Stanley Cup Champion, officially announced his retirement from the game today.
Lecavalier’s announcement: As I publicly announced at the time I was traded to the Los Angeles Kings, the 2015/16 season would be my last in the NHL. I recently informed the Kings that I am stepping away from the game and will no longer play professional hockey. It is my desire and intention to retire.
Hockey has provided me so much in my lifetime but requires an incredible commitment. It is now time for me to devote more time to my family.

The Boston Bruins are willing to risk their future for a proven NHL stud.
After TSN's Darren Dreger reported Monday that the Bruins had made a call to the St. Louis Blues about defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, Dreger added Tuesday that the Bruins have offered a first-round pick for the 27-year-old.
